In 1973, the Golden Gate Rhythm Section was formed by Neil Schon, Gregg Rollie, Ross Valory, George Tickner, and Prairie Prince, and eventually became Journey.

In 1974, Aynsley Dunbar joined Journey, as drummer, replacing Prairie Prince.

In 1977, Robert Fleischman joined Journey and was replaced by Steve Perry as lead vocalist in the same year.

In 1980, Gregg Rollie left Journey and recommended Jonathan Cain, of the Babys, who joined Journey as pianist, keyboardist, and vocalist.
In 1986, Ross Valory left Journey and was replaced by Randy Jackson who joined joined Journey as bassist and backing vocalist.
In 1986, Steve Smith left and was replaced by Larrie Londin, as session drummer, to continue the recordings.
In 1986, Mike Baird became the drummer during the “Raised On Radio” tour.

In 2006, Steve Augeri left Journey and was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto as lead vocalist.

In 2015, Deen Castronovo left Journey.
